Plastics industry professionals from throughout the Southeast gathered at the Charlotte Convention Center October 18-20, 2005, for Plastics Encounter Southeast. The trade show and its co-located events included over 130 exhibits, seven seminars/workshops and two new-product design displays: SPI's Plastics Division Design Gallery and the IDSA IDEA Gallery.

During a special appearance at the show, Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory emphasized the importance of plastics and the manufacturing sector to Charlotte’s economy. His speech kicked off Tuesday’s networking reception on the show floor, which featured live entertainment and free refreshments.

The Plastics News/IDSA Design Day conference drew strong attendance and offered insight into a number of topics. In the photo on the left, Design Day speakers (L-R) Ray Lambert, Sales & Business Development Manager for ExxonMobil Chemical's Santoprene Specialty Products division, David Kusuma, VP of Product Development Worldwide for Tupperware, and Andy Switky, President & GM for IDEO's Asia Pacific Region, participated in a panel discussion about the evolving product-development and innovation process. In the center photo, Point Innovation colleagues Brian Roderman (left), VP of Design, and Ken Buras, VP of Development, spoke regarding what their small Texas design firm learned as it recently set up an engineering and design joint venture in Wuxi, China. In the photo on the right, Design Day speakers mingle with attendees following the conference.

The Plastics News booth was a show hot spot, due in part to a treasure chest filled with gift cards from national merchants. Attendees tried to open the chest with a key they received in the mail. In the left photo, Jim Prillaman of Plastics One took home the top prize – a $500 American Express gift card. The PN both also included photo ops and an eight-foot ship’s wheel that attendees could spin for prizes.

While 12 companies enjoyed the extra booth traffic that resulted from being an InfoQuest sponsor, no one was happier than attendee Rusty McDonald of 3D Systems, who jetted off with the Sea Doo prize.
