Cleveland’s I-X Center was the hottest place on the North Coast for thousands of plastics industry professionals to gather June 22-24, 2004. One admission allowed attendees to visit Plastics Encounter Midwest and the co-located MoldMaking Expo, as well as Amcon (American Contract Manufacturers Show).

At Tuesday’s Design Day Conference, co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America, keynote speaker Walter Herbst, chairman and founding partner of Herbst LaZar Bell Inc., pictured above left, explained how emotion plays a key role in successful design.

In the center photo, speaker John Zebley, design director of Mercury Marine, showed off his handiwork on the Plastics Encounter show floor. The panels on Mercury’s impressive new Verado outboard engine won this year’s IDSA/Plastics News Design Award.

In the far right photo, shown left to right, Ford design manager Terry Duncan and Design Science founder Steve Wilcox yuk it up with Moen Inc. senior industrial designer and local IDSA chief Chris Gilbert during a conference break.

Plastics Encounter trade shows boast an atmosphere like no other. Fun and games lend themselves to a relaxed atmosphere where attendees and exhibitors can more easily network.

InfoQuest, a popular new attraction, puts a new Sea Doo into the hands of a lucky attendee who visits the booth of all the program’s sponsors. Cleveland’s winner was Scott Browbridge of Parker Hannifin Corp.

In other action across the show floor, the Plastics News booth featured a treasure hunt for prizes, Surf City allowed visitors to check e-mail, and afternoon cocktail parties included live music and free hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.
