AKRON, OHIO (June 4, 2001) -- Tough times dictate that
managers stay alert and informed to maintain their competitive
edge. That's why plastics industry executives cannot
afford to miss the conference accompanying the June
19-21 Plastics Encounter Cleveland trade show (formerly
Plastics Fair) at the I-X Center. The program features
24 senior executives discussing market trends and business
conditions in the Midwest's vital plastics industry
sectors.
Attendees
can participate in the conference sessions that start
at 8:30 a.m. and still have plenty of time for networking
and visiting the 150-plus booths on the exhibition show
floor.
And
now, the deal is even better. In response to industry-wide
budget tightening, organizer Plastics News has waived
the previously announced fee to attend the business
conference sessions - for those who register in advance.
(It will cost $25 to register on-site.)
"In
economic downturns, continuing education and training
budgets often are the first to get slashed," noted
Tony Eagan, Plastics News publisher and vice president.
"We know that getting approval to pay to attend
events now is tough - so we've decided to do something
positive about it. Industry officials need the sort
of competitive intelligence that our conference program
offers, and this should help ensure that more benefit
from it."
The
conference lineup includes:
- On Tuesday, June 19, Step2 Co. CEO Tom Murdough
will share insights for "Dealing with change in
today's fast-moving environment," along with presentations
on economic prospects, and a panel on resin-distribution
trends featuring PolyOne, General Polymers and Entec
top officials.
- Wednesday's program highlights compounding
execs from PolyOne and Ferro discussing that sector's
latest market developments, plus a panel featuring officials
from molders Donnelly, Meridian and NYX debating business
strategies for mid-tier automotive suppliers. Finally,
an AMR Research director will discuss the likely impact
of such e-marketplaces on your business.
- Thursday tackles two burning issues - work-force
development (featuring training and HR experts from
Erie Plastics, Precise Technology and United Southern
Industries), and a panel on mold-maker survival, with
senior execs from Delta Tooling, StackTeck Systems,
Midwest Tooling Group, and a Hong Kong-based official
from Incoe.
Separately,
Paulson Training Programs and Compuplast International
are offering two-day simulation training sessions for
injection molding and extrusion operators, respectively,
on June 20-21, for $99 each.

Plastics Encounter Selects Exotic
Ports of Call for 2002

AKRON, OHIO, (May 23, 2001) -- Using the time-honored
principle of "location, location, location," Plastics
Encounter has selected the ports of call for its plastics
industry trade shows in the year 2002. Similar to the
year 2001, the regional shows will be located in the
South and Midwest, and on the West Coast:
* April 16-18, 2002
New Orleans, La.
Ernest N. Morial Convention Center
* September 17-19, 2002
Indianapolis, Ind.
Indiana Convention Center
* November 5-7, 2002
Long Beach, Calif.
Long Beach Convention Center
Linda Whelan, director of trade shows and marketing,
explains the rationale for her choice in cities.
The Big Easy
"Everyone loves New Orleans," Whelan says. "It's a fun
city, and a great draw for exhibitors and attendees
-- especially those who want to combine business with
pleasure."
Whelan continues, "The New Orleans area is also
a growing area for plastics. And Texas, one of the top
plastics states in the country, is just a short distance
away."
The venue for the trade show, the Ernest N. Morial Convention
Center, enjoys a prime location. The recently expanded
hall is located in the Warehouse/Arts district on the
Mississippi River, adjacent to the Aquarium of the Americas,
Riverwalk Marketplace and Harrah's Casino. The center
is also minutes from the French Quarter, Jackson Square
and over 20,000 first-class hotel rooms.
Booth space is already being reserved for Plastics Encounter
New Orleans, and exhibitors who sign up before June
14, 2001, will receive a $1 per square foot discount.
The crossroads of America
Indianapolis was selected as the top spot for the 2002
Midwest show because Indianapolis is a city that's going
places, Whelan says. "Not only is Indianapolis
one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan areas,
but it is
a city that is being re-energized and revitalized."
The city's central location is another big plus, Whelan
adds. Many of the nation's highways converge here, and
half the nation's population is within a day's drive
(600 miles). The city itself is the nation's 12th largest,
and is
in the heartland of the plastics-rich Midwest.
The Indiana Convention Center boasts an excellent location
as well. The facility is just minutes from the Indianapolis
International Airport and is connected via skywalk to
Circle Centre (upscale shopping and entertainment),
six downtown hotels and 6,000 parking spaces.
Booth space for Plastics Encounter Indianapolis will
go on sale at the end of June.
A paradise by the sea
"Long Beach, the site for our West Coast show,
has long been a popular spot for exhibitors and attendees,"
says Whelan. The former Western Plastics Exposition
(owned by Advanstar Communications, purchased by Crain
Communications in 2000 and renamed Plastics Encounter)
had traditionally been located there.
The Long Beach Convention Center overlooks San Pedro
Bay, with views of the Pacific Ocean from a glass concourse
and lobby. The contemporary facility faces the seven-block
Promenade walkway, bridging Long Beach Plaza and the
Shoreline waterfront development and marina.
Long Beach, accessible from three nearby airports, is
the fifth largest city in California. It draws about
4.5 million visitors annually to the city's 5.5 miles
of sandy beaches and shoreline and attractions like
the Long Beach
Aquarium of the Pacific and the Queen Mary, a unique
entertainment complex.
Booth space for Plastics Encounter Long Beach will be
available beginning in mid-November.
Outlook good for Cleveland and Atlanta
While plans begin to take shape for the 2002 ports of
call, Whelan and her staff continue to work on last-minute
details for Plastics Encounter Cleveland, June 19-21
at the I-X Center, and Plastics Encounter Atlanta,
November 13-15, 2001 at the Georgia International Convention
Center.
"We're continuing to gather a good mix of plastics
industry personnel, and look forward to making a splash
in the Midwest and South!" Whelan says.

Encounter shows, please call (888) 368-7229 or visit
